Attributes of PVD Coatings

Depending on the coating chosen, they thus give the parts treated:

  • Tribological properties: very low coefficient of friction (0.1-0.5)
  • Mechanical properties: very high hardness (1500HV-4500HV)
  • Very thin coating thickness ( 2 – 5 µ) – minimal impact on final sizes
    • Electromagnetic shielding properties
    • Optical properties
    • Electrical conductivity properties
    • Antibacterial properties
    • Decorative properties

Other Attributes:

1.  Base material on which PVD coating is applied need not be specific and could be any less expensive material.

2.  PVD Coatings have good bio compatibility. Hence could be applied both on food handling & processing industries as well as medical instruments.

3.  PVD Coatings are harder than Chromium & Nickel plating. Hence they impart very high surface hardness. Also the co efficient of friction obtained with PVD coatings reduces by 300-500% compared Chromium & Nickel platings.
4.  PVD coatings impart a significant improvement in wear, scuffing and galling resistance on Stainless steel materials without affecting their Corrosion resistance.

5.  DLC coatings are ideal for friction reduction and can serve as a very effective solid-film 'lubricant'. This is especially relevant for medical, food handling and outer space applications where the usage of lubricants and greases are not permissible.
